Where to Wear: March 2023

Talks of warmer weather have entered the conversation here in Kansas City and our TIVOL team is ready to march forth into a new season (see what we did there?). This month calls for a celebration of Saint Patrick...not that Patrick (Mahomes), the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland.

Kidnapped and brought to Ireland in the 5th century, Saint Patrick escaped enslavement at the age of 16 and later returned to Ireland to bring a message of hope and salvation to its people. He is credited with bringing Christianity to the Irish people and has been honored with parades and celebrations since his death on March 17, 461.

Although annual celebrations existed amongst traditional Irish families long before, the first parade on record is said to have taken place in St. Augustine, Florida in 1601. Up until that point, celebrations largely consisted of traditional morning church service followed by food and festivities in the evening. Adopting a tradition of parading in honor of St. Patrick, celebrations were typically hosted by Irish clubs and societies put together by migrants who had found their way to America and were living in the middle class.

That shifted, however, during the Great Potato Famine of Ireland (in the middle part of the 19th century) when mass quantities of poor Irish citizens made their way to the United States in search of a better life. Their presence was not as well received as the generations before them and their celebrations were often documented as wild, drunken festivities on the streets.

Two centuries plus later and the balance between traditional ceremonies and parades on the streets has left us in anticipation each year to come together as a community to enjoy St. Patricks Day. Kansas City is no exception, hosting one of the larger celebrations in the Midwest.

No matter how - or what - you choose to celebrate this month, there's always reason to be festive here in KC. We've chosen two looks for your March style inspiration, with touches of green to complement any St. Patty party you plan to enjoy. Take a look...
